Barbara L. Novek

A founding partner of Sweibel Novek L.L.P., Ms. Novek’s practice focuses primarily on the tax issues of small and medium size corporations and their shareholders.  In this context, she is involved in both tax and estate planning and deals regularly with trusts, wills and business succession issues, as well as with the purchase and sale of businesses, shareholder agreements, partnerships and corporate reorganizations.  She is also frequently called upon to advise clients on tax issues relating to immigration and emigration and other cross-border tax matters and to represent clients in disputes with federal and provincial tax authorities.

Ms. Novek has been recognized repeatedly in the annual publication of The Best Lawyers in Canada in the practice areas of Taxation Law and Trusts and Estates and has been named as one of LawDay’s top 60 leading lawyers in Canada in the area of Estates and Trusts for 2009.  She is the author of numerous articles in the area of taxation and is a regular speaker at tax conferences.  She has also lectured at the Quebec Bar School and the Quebec Order of Chartered Accountants.

Ms. Novek is a member, as well as a former Governor, of the Canadian Tax Foundation.  She is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and serves on the Editorial Board of the STEP Inside Journal.  Her other professional affiliations include the International Fiscal Association (IFA), the Association de Planification fiscale et financière (APFF), and the Canadian Bar Association.  Ms. Novek is also involved in community endeavors and currently serves as President of the Jewish Rehabilitation Hospital in Laval, Quebec and as a director and officer of the Jewish Community Foundation.

Ms. Novek received her Law Degree from the Université de Montréal in 1981 and was called to the Quebec Bar in 1982 after placing first in the province on the Quebec Bar exams.
